“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)
When I came across this verse earlier today, it stopped me in my tracks. I immediately thought of one of my Mom’s signature catch phrases, “God is the best artist ever!”
While I’ve always agreed with her and thought that statement to be true, it never fully clicked for me until now. If God is an artist, that makes us His masterpiece, a work of outstanding skill and craftsmanship! Those are some pretty magnificent words, words you would use to describe something of great value. As God’s masterpiece, we are of great value and importance to Him!
For the past few weeks, I’ve been praying for God to reveal the parts of my character that I need to adjust and refocus around Him. When you ask to hear from God, be prepared to listen! Almost immediately, approval was the word that the Lord repeatedly began to show me. It came up over and over again, making it impossible to ignore and causing me to wonder, “Who am I trying to please?” In the middle of journaling a prayer last week, I felt compelled to open my devotional book and read the message for that day. The last thing I’d written down in my prayer journal read, “Help me to focus my thoughts on You instead of looking to the world for fleeting glimpses of approval.” When I opened the devotional, the first line was a passage of scripture from Galatians 1:10, “Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God?” I was instantly convicted of looking for validation from others instead of finding my worth in God. Instead of seeking the things of the world, we must learn to seek the Kingdom of God first. Our salvation in Christ is of much greater value than the riches of this world. In Matthew 6:33, Jesus tells us to “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.”
A masterpiece is something that has value. We are valuable because we were created by the greatest Artist ever to exist! And if we place our identity in Christ, we won’t need the approval of others to validate our self-worth. You are God’s masterpiece and you are valuable! The Creator of the universe created you and has plans for your life. How awesome is that?
