Christmas in Nicaragua

Faith, Travel

Over winter break I had the opportunity to spend a few days in Diriamba, Nicaragua to celebrate Christmas with young girls living in a home of protection.

These girls came from backgrounds unlike anything I had ever seen. Ten and eleven year olds with babies. Children with children of their own. Sisters and friends abused and neglected. But the JOY was unimaginable!

These girls were precious, full of light and love. Their smiles were bright and their laughter contagious. We had so much fun dancing freely and giggling through the struggle of communicating despite the language barrier.

This trip was eye-opening. The poverty that surrounds the people of Nicaragua broke my heart. It was a reminder of how beautifully blessed I am. I left feeling full and empty. Full with delight and happiness from the time shared with these sweet kids, yet empty knowing how well I have it compared to them. I’m counting down the days until I can return and gladly accept the bear-hugs that I know await me.

In the meantime please join me in praying for these girls. Pray for healing from past wounds. Pray that they will know they were created for a powerful purpose. And pray that they will come to know how valued and loved they are by their heavenly Father no matter what their background is.

“We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God: those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28
