For those of you who know me, you’ve probably heard me talk about George before. George is my grandpa and one of my all-time favorite people.
George is a special guy. During my first year of college, he mailed letters of encouragement to me for every single week of school.
This is something he does for all of his college-aged grandchildren. To this day, he still continues to send them regularly. I’ve saved every last one and have a drawer overflowing with the notes written from his yellow legal pad.
His letters consistently end with a few pieces of advice and this closing line:
“Always remember, keep God first in everything you do. Love, Grandpa”
I’ve seen this sentence so many times that I often overlook it. But recently, it stood out to me.
“Keep God first in everything you do.”
Oh man. This is something I struggle with!
It’s so easy to forget about God in the mundane aspects of life. I get caught up in the whirlwind of deadlines, assignments, and meetings and leave my spiritual walk on the back-burner or scheduled into specific times of my week.
Trying to “pencil” God into my busy schedule seems ridiculous, but that’s essentially what sometimes happens.
Okay God, I’ve got you down for Wednesday night and Sunday morning. How does that sound?
Of course it’s important to consistently set aside time to read the Bible and worship, but what if we made our lives an act of worship? What if we talked to God constantly like a friend? What if we consulted Him first to seek guidance before making decisions?
When I actively refocus my thoughts on God, I am ultimately happier and kinder to the people around me. Keeping the Lord at the center of my life gives me an entirely new outlook.
You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13
